Pierre Surprenant, 51, died in a tragic accident in upstate New York on
Sunday, August 3, 2008. Surprenant was returning home from the SPAAMFA
muster in Syracuse when his 1960 Thibault Aerial got a flat tire. When he
stopped to fix the tire, New York State Trooper, Shawn Snow, 47 stopped to
assist.
In order to balance the weight of the apparatus away from the flat right
rear tire the ladder was raised. It has yet to be determined exactly what
happened however the ladder came in contact with overhead wires and both
men were instantly killed.
Snow was a 19 year veteran of the New York State Police and Surprenant
was the former chief of the Ottawa International Airport Fire Department
and a past director of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. While
pursuing his interest in older fire apparatus he had also recently started
teaching near Montreal.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and families of both men as
they will be deeply missed.
