The driver of a truck heading west on Auroroute 20 at Rivière-Beaudette lost control of his vehicle and crossed the centre median and hit on oncoming truck which was travelling east. The violence of the impact was sufficiently strong to tear the cabs from their chassis.

In the blue truck there was a man driving as well as his wife who was asleep in the back of the sleeper cab. The man was removed alive but in grave condition and the woman was dead. The driver of the red truck was also found dead. The driver of the third truck only suffered nervous shock.

Serveral emergency services were dispatchet to the scene. The Sûreté du Québec's Montéregie autoroute station, the "contrôleurs routiers", Transport Québec, Environnement Québec, vehicles 218 and 518 of the Rivière-Beaudette Fire Department as well as 523 and 5023 from St-Zotique. The Ontario Provincial Police also made their contribution.

An important traffic problem was caused by this accident. Autoroute 20 and Ontario Highway 401 were closed in both directions for several hours. Traffic was detoured onto Route 338. For most of the day a heavy fog made visibility difficult.
